'Nothing big': Puchong PKR chief downplays commotion at party meeting

The Puchong PKR annual general division meeting held yesterday reportedly turned rowdy, sparking demands from grassroots leaders for an immediate rerun.

The commotion, recordings of which have since gone viral on social media, is believed to have stemmed from a dispute regarding the selection of divisional delegates to the PKR National Congress scheduled to take place in Malacca in June.

Following the incident, Puchong PKR division committee member Parithi Vaanan Ramasamy submitted a formal application to the party’s secretary-general Fuziah Salleh to nullify the meeting’s decisions.

In the letter sighted by the media, Parithi alleged that the meeting was conducted in a disorganised manner and violated the party's democratic principles.

“The meeting was hastily adjourned without the consent of the majority of members present.

“There are allegations that the meeting agenda was pre-planned, including the appointment of the permanent chairperson, proposers, and seconders with prepared scripts.

“This situation shows that the meeting did not take place in the spirit of true democracy. Therefore, we ask the top leadership to hold a rerun," he told Malaysiakini.

Malaysiakini has contacted Fuziah for comment.

‘Minor commotion’

However, Puchong PKR division chief Zaihasri Jaafar refuted allegations of irregularities in the meeting.

When contacted, Zaihasri described the incident as a “minor commotion” typical of the party's democratic process and maintained that the overall meeting proceeded smoothly.

“Nothing big. The meeting went smoothly, and there are no issues,” he said to Malaysiakini.

The issue in the Puchong division has drawn attention as it was previously linked to the “headless bodies” phenomenon during the party election last May - where the team sweeps committee positions, but the faction leader loses the race to be division chief. - Mkini
