The ministry will discuss the matter with the Selangor government, says minister Dr Taufiq Johari.
Minister Dr Taufiq Johari said a special meeting of the Sukma supreme committee would be held, comprising representatives from all states, the National Sports Council and the Olympic Council of Malaysia, to discuss the matter.
“The sultan has expressed his concern over the ongoing global energy crisis and its impact on the country’s economy, as well as the need to wait for the Shah Alam Stadium to be fully completed.
“I will seek the Selangor government’s views and feedback as the host on this matter,” Bernama reported him as saying.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the fourth session of the 15th Selangor state legislative assembly at the state secretariat building, Sultan Sharafuddin said the multi-sport event from Aug 15 to 24 would incur considerable costs.
He also decreed that this year’s Sultan of Selangor Cup football match between Selangor and Singapore be cancelled.
Separately, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the state would leave it to the youth and sports ministry and Sukma supreme committee to decide on the hosting of the games.
“The most important thing is that our athletes’ preparation for the 2027 SEA Games is not affected. Sukma is one of the platforms used to identify athletes’ capabilities.
“We will take a holistic look at the matter and listen to input from the state executive councillors,” he said. - FMT
