CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened an investigation into a TikTok user suspected of uploading false content against the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki.
The MCMC said it had recorded a statement from the person to assist in the investigation.
Officers also seized a communication device used to upload the content.
"The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, up to two years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction," the commission said in a statement.
The MCMC stressed that it views the misuse of social media and digital platforms to mislead the public through the spread of false information seriously.
"Strict enforcement action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws," it said.
The commission reminded the public to remain responsible when using digital platforms and to avoid misusing communication facilities to spread content that could affect public order or social harmony. - NST
