
He described the 665km rail link as a "transformative" project connecting the east and west coasts, which would spur economic growth in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.
"The ECRL will also strengthen Asean's multimodal network, improving land-sea connectivity and supply chain resilience, particularly between Chinese ports and Kuantan Port," he said at the Asean Ports & Logistics Exhibition and Conference 2026 today.
He said the project was complemented by the modernisation of Port Klang, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Kuantan New Deep-Water Terminal Phase 2.
"Complementing this initiative, Malaysia continues to modernise and expand its port infrastructure through strategic developments at Port Klang, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Kuantan New Deep-Water Terminal Phase 2.
"These investments will enhance capacity, improve operational efficiency and support future regional trade growth," he said.
These projects, alongside the Westports Phase 2 expansion and the Carey Island Port project, are strategic investments incorporating smart and green technologies to support future maritime trade.
Loke also highlighted the government's push to shift cargo from road to rail to reduce congestion and carbon emissions. He cited the recently reopened Segamat Inland Port as a key example.
"The facility, supported by the Gemas-Johor Baru double-tracking project and new locomotives, holds much promise to boost northern Johor's economy," he said.
The ECRL is currently 94 per cent complete.
The 519km Kota Baru-Gombak alignment is scheduled for completion this year, ahead of the start of passenger services in January 2027. - NST
