Onn Hafiz: Maszlee should debate Puteri Wangsa candidates, not me

BATU PAHAT: Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said there is no need for him to take part in a dialogue or debate with Dr Maszlee Malik, as they are contesting different seats in the Johor election.

The Johor Barisan Nasional chairman said if Maszlee wanted a debate, the Pakatan Harapan candidate for Puteri Wangsa should instead debate the candidates contesting the same seat.

Onn Hafiz is defending the Machap seat for a second term in the July 11 polls.

"I am not contesting against him.

"So if he wants to debate or hold a dialogue, he should do it with the candidates there (in Puteri Wangsa).

"What does it have to do with my constituency?" he told reporters after attending the Kasi On Bersama Menteri Besar Johor programme in Semerah here today.

He was responding to a proposal for Maszlee and him for a dialogue after the latter said he was willing to accept an invitation to debate ahead of the Johor election.

Onn Hafiz also claimed that voters in the Simpang Renggam parliamentary constituency were still waiting for Maszlee to fulfil promises made during his tenure as their member of Parliament.

He said one of the promises residents continue to raise is Maszlee's pledge to abolish toll charges, which he claimed has yet to be fulfilled.

"At the same time, the people of Simpang Renggam are still asking about his promises. He promised toll-free travel, but until today that promise has not been fulfilled," he said.

Maszlee had previously accepted an invitation to debate Onn Hafiz, describing it as an opportunity to educate the public and promote a more mature political culture.

However, Onn Hafiz's team later said the incumbent Machap assemblyman would be unable to attend the dialogue because of prior commitments. - NST
