MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has refuted claims that DAP is a racist organisation, stressing that the party has never disputed Malay rights.
Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, said as proof, DAP did not object to the government's plan to gazette 20.23 hectares of land in Bandar Malaysia as Malay Reserve Land.
However, he said that as the head of the unity government, his responsibility is to ensure fairness to all ethnic groups so that the nation's prosperity is shared collectively.
"When we carry out programmes for the Malay community and Bumiputeras, or increase allocations for Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad, DAP has no issue with it.
"But I must also ensure that initiatives for the Chinese community are not blocked. The poor among the Chinese and Indians must be helped, just as the majority of the poor among the Malays are assisted," he said at the Temu Anwar programme held at a restaurant hall here today.
Anwar added that despite the current economic boom, national wealth must be distributed fairly across all segments of society rather than enriching specific individuals.
He said economic growth should translate directly into public well-being through the provision of comfortable housing, better basic facilities, and upgraded educational quality.
"The economy is growing, and we want it distributed fairly to ensure the improvement of the people's homes, stalls, basic amenities, and education quality.
"I want the younger generation to understand that power is a trust to be executed, not a tool for self-enrichment. Politics is about service, not personal wealth," he said.
The upcoming Johor election sees 172 candidates contesting 56 state assembly seats, with early voting scheduled for July 7 and polling day set for July 11. - NST
