Ti pans KJ's claim only Umno can safeguard Malays; permanent house officers posts by 2028

Politics

  • Former deputy unity minister Ti Lian Ker has criticised Khairy Jamaluddin for claiming that only Umno can safeguard Malay interests.

In a statement today, Ti said that such remarks may have held traction in the 1960s and 1970s, but Malaysia has since evolved significantly, with stronger institutions, a growing Malay middle class, and firmly embedded constitutional protections.

Ti also lamented that Umno's long period of political dominance led to an over-concentration of power, and alleged that this had enabled patronage, abuse of authority and corruption, which gradually eroded public trust and contributed to growing disaffection with Umno and BN.

He said the real challenges facing the Malays today are corruption, abuse of power and weak governance, among others.

Public healthcare

  • The Health Ministry aimed to offer permanent posts to all house officers immediately upon completing their training by 2028, said its minister Dzulkefly Ahmad.

He said the target was part of the ministry’s ongoing human resources reform agenda via the Inter-Ministerial Joint Task Force.

“By 2028, the ministry targets to offer permanent posts to all house officers immediately upon completing their training. A true 'whole-of-government' approach at work!

"We hear your concerns and we are actively closing the gaps. This year alone, 4,500 contract medical officers will be absorbed into permanent roles, alongside 800 new positions approved annually,” he said on X.

Law enforcement

  • The Road Transport Department is cracking down on illegal ride-hailing practices at KLIA, where some licensed e-hailing drivers were found circumventing official booking apps to solicit passengers directly from arriving tourists.

These drivers allegedly wait in arrival areas and approach travellers, offering off-app rides at inflated prices.

Bernama reported RTD director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli saying that foreign tourists were misled into paying excessive fares of up to RM800 when it would only cost RM65 to RM80 and, in some cases, were threatened if they refused to pay. - Mkini
