Onn Hafiz: Johor polls are about seeking fresh mandate, not freeing Najib

BATU PAHAT: The Johor election is being held solely to return the mandate to the people to vote for the next state government, caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said.

The Johor Barisan Nasional chairman said the state election has nothing to do with efforts to secure the release of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from his jail term.

Onn Hafiz described such narratives propagated by BN's rivals in the election as a form of incitement.

"This state election is being held to return the mandate to the people. It has nothing to do with Datuk Seri Najib.

"This is an example of incitement aimed at making people angry and creating hatred. But the people in Johor are not like that.

"We are smarter than what they think. To me, this is their usual way of inciting and making empty promises.

"This has always been their strategy, and this is the mentality of the opposition. It is better for them to remain in opposition," he told reporters after attending the Kasi On programme with the Menteri Besar in Parit Guntong, Semerah, here today.

Also present were two BN candidates, Mohd Fared Khalid (Semerah) and Datuk Zulkurnain Kamisan (Sri Medan).

It was recently reported that several PH leaders, during campaigns and ceramahs, claimed that the state election was held early to secure Najib's release.

They alleged that the state election was called because certain parties wanted to return to power in order to secure the release of the former prime minister.

Early voting will take place tomorrow, while polling day has been fixed for this Saturday. - NST
