AirBorneo fare model prompts rivals to cut prices, says Abang Johari

 Sarawak premier says AirBorneo wanted to ensure passengers had more choices and that airfares remained reasonable.

Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg says AirBorneo’s planned affordable fare model of RM375 has prompted rival airlines to lower their prices to remain competitive.

He said the introduction of Sarawak’s own airline was aimed at giving travellers more options while addressing concerns over rising airfares, especially during peak travel periods, such as festive seasons and school holidays, DayakDaily reported.

“AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines also reduced their airfares when we introduced our RM375 fare (from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur),” he was quoted as saying at a PBB event in Sibu.

Abang Johari said AirBorneo, which launched its inaugural flight from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur on Monday, wanted to ensure passengers had more choices and that airfares remained reasonable.

He said Sarawakians had long been affected by steep fare increases during peak periods, adding that high ticket prices could place a heavy burden on families travelling together.

“That is why I am determined to challenge this situation. That is why AirBorneo, owned by Sarawak, was created,” he said.

“At least you have an option which airline, which aircraft you want to use. It is up to you. But the fare must be reasonable.” - FMT
