Zahid: No one above law if implicated in Tabung Haji RCI report

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stressed that no one will be above the law if they are implicated in the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH).

Zahid, who is also the BN chairperson, said the RCI findings must be made public transparently, and any alleged wrongdoing should be dealt with through due legal processes.

“The findings from the RCI investigation and study must be made known transparently.

“If there is any abuse of power, irregularity, criminal breach of trust, or other malpractices, there are processes to lodge police reports and conduct investigations in terms of commercial crimes and other legal aspects, which can be carried out subsequently,” he said.

He was speaking at the Malaysian Armed Forces Southern Zone Family Day Carnival at Kem Syed Sirajuddin, Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, which was also attended by Army chief Azhan Othman.

Asked whether the release of the report could affect BN’s campaign in the Negeri Sembilan state election, Zahid, who is also the Umno president, said he did not believe it would have an impact.

He said voters in the state were capable of making mature and informed decisions.

“I do not think it will have any influence... The people, especially voters in Negeri Sembilan, are very wise in making their assessments. In their minds and hearts, they know which candidate and which coalition they will vote for,” he said.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had earlier expressed confidence that the cabinet would agree to make public the RCI report on TH after it was tabled for consideration.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the previous delay in releasing the report was due to concerns that it could undermine public confidence in TH.

However, he said the situation had since changed, with the institution strengthened and gaining international recognition.

Early voting for the Negeri Sembilan state election is scheduled for Tuesday, with polling day set for Aug 1.
