Tabung Haji RCI report: Don't expect criminal charges - PKR MP; Najib undergoes heart test

Tabung Haji RCI

  • Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa agrees with making the Tabung Haji royal commission of inquiry report public, saying this would allow Malaysians to judge the institution’s management from 2014 to 2020 and end years of controversy.

The former religious affairs minister, who testified before the panel, said he was prepared to be assessed based on its findings, including any shortcomings during his tenure.

“For me, the time has come for the RCI report to be made public. We want to know who was truly responsible for undermining Tabung Haji and who saved the institution,” he said, according to Bernama

Mujahid added that releasing the report would help restore confidence among Tabung Haji’s 9.2 million depositors and ensure conclusions were based on an independent inquiry rather than political allegations.

  • Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has urged the public not to expect any criminal prosecutions following the public release of the report.

In a video on TikTok, the PKR lawmaker stressed that the role of an RCI is limited to fact-finding and making recommendations - it does not have any powers to arrest or charge individuals.

As the testimony given before an RCI generally cannot be used directly as evidence in criminal proceedings, Hassan said any findings in the report related to legal violations would have to be referred by the government to the relevant enforcement agencies, such as the MACC, police, or Securities Commission Malaysia.

Those agencies would then conduct their own investigations before submitting them to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for the decision on a prosecution, he explained.

Najib in hospital

  • Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has undergone a coronary angiogram at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, his lawyer Shafee Abdullah said.

In a statement today, Shafee said the procedure - an X-ray examination to assess blockages in the heart - determined that Najib would not require any further invasive medical interventions.

The condition can be managed effectively with medication, continuous monitoring, and follow-up treatment, he added.

Politics

  • The Kuala Terengganu Umno division has urged the party leadership to reassess BN’s position in the unity government if its partners continue to disregard the agreement underpinning the administration.

Sinar Harian reported that the motion was unanimously approved at the division’s annual general meeting on Friday.

Its proposer, Ibrahim Muda, said BN joined the government after the 15th general election based on a political agreement aimed at ensuring stability and public well-being.

“This motion is not intended to reject the principle of the unity government. Instead, it emphasises that BN’s participation is based on a political agreement accepted by all parties.

“Therefore, if any party no longer respects the spirit of that understanding or chooses to act outside the agreed framework, BN should not be forced to remain in a form of cooperation that has deviated from its original purpose,” he said. - Mkini
