N SEMBILAN POLLS | Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has likened the Perikatan Nasional-BN partnership to the ill-fated Titanic, foreseeing an iceberg in its path.
The DAP lawmaker made the ominous comparison during a speech in Negeri Sembilan last night when campaigning for Pakatan Harapan candidate Bakir Sawir, who is defending his Klawang seat.
Yeoh also praised the sturdiness of the Harapan vessel, with chairperson Anwar Ibrahim at the helm, noting that it had stayed afloat despite navigating through numerous political storms.
In a Facebook post about her speech, the Segambut MP said the theme was political friendship.
“I reflected on the strengths and weaknesses of the parties within Harapan that have held our alliance together.
“I reminded those present not to worry or get excited about the cooperation between BN and PN. That partnership will not last long because it is overshadowed by betrayal and those who are not loyal to the spirit of political friendship.
“I compared their cooperation to the ship in the movie ‘Titanic’, which will sink at any moment. They cheered happily at the beginning of the voyage, but eventually sank after hitting a massive iceberg that they failed to see ahead,” she added.
Yeoh said with each side aspiring to become the prime minister, they do not want to see the other succeed and were willing to step on one another to reach the top.
“They are like the Titanic, merely waiting for the moment to sink because they lack the value of political friendship,” she added.
However, Yeoh said the cooperation within Harapan between PKR, Amanah, and DAP has stood the test of time, with all three parties remaining committed to fighting alongside and defending Anwar until he was elevated as the 10th prime minister.
“We remain with only one captain steering the ship,” she added.
Testy relations
Anwar became prime minister in 2022 after forging an alliance with BN to break the post-GE15 deadlock. The partnership, however, has been repeatedly tested over the past four years, particularly by tensions between DAP and Umno.
The relationship became further strained after BN decided to contest against Harapan in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan elections, while also partnering with PN in the latter.
Yesterday, BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also deputy prime minister, denied any intention of bringing down the Anwar administration.
“I have absolutely no such intention. There is no ‘Langkah Bangkok’ or ‘Langkah Dubai’ or anything of that sort.
“We remain steadfast, and we are committed to being part of the unity government following the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said. - Mkini
