Jakim develops Islamic governance index to strengthen policy delivery

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) is developing the Malaysia Maqasid Syariah Index as a framework to guide policy implementation, assess performance and strengthen integrity-based governance.

Its director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the initiative aimed to strengthen governance and inclusive development based on maqasid syariah, or the objectives of Islamic law.

He said Jakim would also continue enhancing strategic cooperation with key stakeholders, including State Islamic Religious Councils and State Islamic Religious Departments.

"Jakim appreciates the decree by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, calling on Islamic countries to strengthen governance and promote inclusive development based on maqasid syariah principles.

"His Royal Highness' decree serves as an important guide in strengthening the country's administrative system, ensuring it remains anchored on justice, trust, integrity and the well-being of the people," he said in a statement today.

Sirajuddin said Jakim established an expert panel committee for the development of the Malaysia Maqasid Syariah Index in February, chaired by Federal Territories Mufti Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil.

He said Jakim remained committed to strengthening organisational governance through integrity, accountability, professionalism and trustworthiness in serving the religion, nation and people.

In his royal address at the 8th World Conference on Islamic Thought and Civilisation on July 21, Sultan Nazrin said a public service that serves all citizens regardless of race, religion or political beliefs reflects national unity and humble leadership that listens before making laws.

The Perak ruler said development could not be pursued in isolation, as trade, investment, knowledge exchange and technology remained key drivers of prosperity. - NST
