Kidnap victim held over suspected drug syndicate link

Police have confirmed that a victim rescued from kidnapping on Sunday has been detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the man was detained after investigations found that a drug trafficking syndicate might be linked to the case.

He said the Bukit Aman narcotics crime investigation department assisted in the investigation.

Kumar said two other men had also been arrested to assist in the investigation, bringing the total number of arrests to eight so far.

He said preliminary checks found that the victim did not have a permanent job.

He also said several suspects, including the victim, tested positive for drugs when they were arrested.

“Investigations are also being carried out into the ownership of assets and the involvement of other individuals in the syndicate,” he said.

On Sunday, police rescued a man who had been kidnapped after his wife lodged a report over a RM7 million ransom demand.

The victim was rescued about 48 hours later in a special operation by the Bukit Aman CID with cooperation from the Special Branch and the Selangor CID at a residential unit in i-City, Shah Alam.

In the operation, police arrested five men and one woman and seized drugs, mobile phones and vehicles believed to have been used in the kidnapping.

The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961 for kidnapping for ransom, as well as under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. - FMT
