The Prisons Department has broken its silence on Suaram’s allegations of new abuse cases, including one purportedly resulting in an inmate’s death, by saying that the matter is under police investigation.
However, the department stopped short of confirming or denying any facts about the allegations, including whether a death had occurred. Instead, it said it will await the findings of the police investigation before commenting.
“The public is urged not to speculate or spread unverified information until authorities complete their investigation,” it added.
It emphasised its commitment to ensuring that all inmates receive treatment in line with the law, regulations, procedures, and principles of good governance.
The Court of Appeal has unanimously ruled that two Malaysian-born persons are not entitled to citizenship as their biological fathers were not married to their non-Malaysian mothers during their births.
Appellate court judge Azhahari Kamal Ramli, who chaired a three-judge panel, sided with the High Court’s initial rejection of the plaintiffs’ bids to be recognised and declared as Malaysians, Malay Mail reported.
Both plaintiffs’ non-Malaysian mothers were not part of their lives growing up, with their local fathers raising them in Malaysia.
ADSAzhahari said that since the plaintiffs are considered illegitimate children, reference must be made to Section 17 of the Federal Constitution’s Second Schedule’s Part III, which states that the parent of a child born out of wedlock can only refer to the child’s mother.
Career diplomat Joshua Harris has reportedly been nominated as the next United States ambassador to Malaysia, following the dropped nomination of controversial “alpha male” commentator Nick Adams for the post.
Citing a White House statement, The Edge reported today that Harris’ nomination has been sent to the US Senate, after which its foreign relations committee will conduct several processes before a voting and confirmation session.
Harris, who speaks multiple languages including Arabic, is the deputy assistant secretary for the North Africa bureau covering Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia.
Adams was previously widely criticised for making Islamophobic remarks that prompted concerns among Malaysian quarters about his suitability to represent Washington in a Muslim-majority country.
The Code of Conduct on the South China Sea is expected to be finalised at the 49th Asean Summit, which is scheduled to take place in Manila in November.
