Drivers face action for speed testing on public roads; DAP MP calls for justice over shooting

 

Road safety

• Motorists testing their vehicle speeds on public roads can face enforcement action even if they are not racing other vehicles, said Deputy Transport Minister Hasbi Habibollah said.

  “Public roads, including straight stretches, must not be used as a place to test vehicle speeds as such activities should be carried out on racing circuits,” Bernama reported him saying in a speech on the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2026 in the Dewan Negara today.

  Hasbi said further clarification on the distinction between speed testing and speeding would be provided after amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) are gazetted.

  The Bill, aimed at curbing illegal racing and speed-testing activities involving all vehicles, was later passed by the Dewan Negara with a majority vote.

  It introduces Section 42A(2), which makes it an offence to test vehicle speed on a road. Offenders face a fine of RM2,000 to RM10,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.

Human rights

• DAP’s Klang MP V Ganabatirau has urged authorities to act against those responsible for the fatal shooting of three men in Durian Tunggal, Malacca, last year if an inquest finds evidence of wrongdoing.

  His call came after the Attorney-General’s Chambers announced yesterday that it had ordered an inquest, a move that angered the victims’ families, who sought murder charges against the police personnel involved.

  In a statement, Ganabatirau stressed that an inquest does not replace a criminal investigation and called for justice to be served.

Refugee management

• The Home Ministry expects to obtain comprehensive refugee data by year-end through the Immigration Department’s Refugee Registration Document programme, to support more systematic management of the group.

  Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the data collection had begun and would provide more credible and detailed information on registered refugees.
