JOHOR BARU: A total of 108 foreign nationals, some of whom were running businesses, have been detained by the Immigration Department for violating travel laws.
Johor Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the department and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) carried out a joint operation focusing on shops known to be run by foreigners in Taman Sri Bahagia here on Monday (July 20) night.
The premises inspected included eateries and mobile phone shops.
"We inspected the foreigners' travel documents, passes and permits to ensure that their presence and activities in Malaysia were in accordance with the law.
"As a result, we detained 101 men and seven women, aged 18 to 49 years old, for various immigration offences," he said in a statement on Wednesday (July 22).
Those detained were from Indonesia, Nepal, India, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Pakistan, he said, adding that two summonses have been issued to locals to act as witnesses in the investigations.
Rusdi added that those detained have been sent to the Setia Tropika immigration depot to aid investigations under the Immigration Act 1953/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963. - Star
