GRS secretary-general Armizan Mohd Ali says the federal government still has more than one-and-a-half years left in its term.
He said the coalition was focused on the state’s development and safeguarding Sabahans’ welfare, adding that the federal government still has more than one-and-a-half years left in its term.
“There has never been any discussion within GRS leadership about such a meeting.
“This is especially so when the country is facing the impact of global geopolitical conflicts,” he told FMT.
Separately, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chief whip Fadillah Yusof said the coalition was never contacted or invited by any party for a meet.
“Yes, (there was) none,” he said when contacted.
Earlier today, Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi denied rumours that leaders from BN, Perikatan Nasional (PN), GPS and GRS would be meeting today.
The deputy prime minister said he was unaware of any such meeting and reiterated that BN would continue supporting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration until the next general election (GE16).
The rumours of a meeting and press conference at 2pm today gained traction on social media, possibly following BN and PN’s electoral pact for the Negeri Sembilan polls.
An analyst recently said GPS and GRS were expected to continue playing a crucial role in maintaining the unity government’s stability should BN decide to pull out.
A political party needs the support of 112 out of 222 MPs to secure a simple majority in the Dewan Rakyat. Anwar’s government currently has the backing of 151 MPs, giving it a two-thirds majority.
This comprises 77 MPs from Pakatan Harapan, 30 from BN, 23 from GPS, seven from GRS, and several others from smaller parties and independent MPs. PN has 68 seats.
BN, PN, GPS and GRS were involved in the political realignment that led to the collapse of the PH government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad in February 2020, after they backed Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.
The 2022 general election resulted in a hung Parliament, but Anwar formed the government after BN, GPS and GRS agreed to support him as prime minister. - FMT
