Bukit Aman CID director M Kumar says 161 were arrested, including five men believed to be directors or shareholders of a company that managed the syndicate.
Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said 19 premises in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were raided on July 16 under Ops Soga XI.
He said 161 people, including 55 women, were arrested in the operation. Six of them were foreigners.
“Police also arrested five men believed to be directors or shareholders of a company that managed the syndicate,” he said at the Subang Jaya police headquarters.
Kumar said the syndicate offered football betting and other forms of online gambling to domestic and foreign customers through an app it had developed.
He said police seized 182 computers, 137 laptops, 152 mobile phones, modems, routers, decoders, bank cards, and other equipment believed to have been used for gambling.
He said the investigation found that several companies were linked to the syndicate.
“Some purportedly provided computer services, but were in fact running the gambling operations,” he said.
He said police carried out 649 raids and arrested 945 people under Ops Soga XI from June 19 to July 20, comprising 835 men and 110 women.
Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had also detected 637 websites promoting online gambling, some of which have since been blocked. - FMT
