N SEMBILAN POLLS | An independent candidate has landed in hot water after the MCMC issued him a criminal charge notice this afternoon over a social media post.
A copy of the notice sighted by Malaysiakini stated that Sri Tanjung candidate Islah Wahyudi Zainudin, 46, is required to appear before the Sepang Sessions Court on Aug 11 to face a charge under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
According to his social media campaign manager, Harris Nasril, the case concerns an Instagram post Islah uploaded in January.
The post saw Islah questioning why many places in Negeri Sembilan were named in English rather than Bahasa Malaysia.
It was accompanied by a sketch of three men, one of whom held a drink can bearing what appeared to be the DAP logo, and speech bubbles with the phrases “Daulat Tuanku” and “Daulat Dickson”.
He is expected to be charged with posting “grossly offensive” content with the intention of insulting others, an offence punishable by a fine of up to RM500,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both.
Account blocked
Harris told Malaysiakini that Meta had also blocked the Instagram account that Islah used, “randuk.malaysia”, following a request from the MCMC.
Malaysiakini has reached out to the MCMC for comment.
Islah is contesting the Sri Tanjung seat against four other candidates, including incumbent assemblyperson Dr G Rajasekaran of Pakatan Harapan, BN’s A Achutan, Bersatu’s M Leevineshwaraan, and independent candidate A Saravanan.
Backed by Tamim
Some social media users have promoted Islah as the only Malay and Muslim candidate in the race, urging voters to back him.
He is also being backed by self-proclaimed activist Tamim Dahri, who was charged at the Langkawi Magistrate’s Court earlier today with damaging a Hindu religious item at the former site of a temple in Langkawi.
Tamim pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He returned from overseas several days ago to help with Islah’s campaign before surrendering himself to the police. - Mkini
