Man arrested for damaging election flags in Negri Sembilan

SEREMBAN: A man became the first person arrested in the state in connection with an election-related offence during the Negri Sembilan state election campaign.

Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the suspect was detained for allegedly damaging a Pakatan Harapan flag along the roadside near the Mengkan Bridge in Kuala Klawang.

"Last night, a team of police officers arrested a man following a report lodged on July 19 regarding party flags being damaged and thrown into a drain.

"An investigation paper has been opened under Section 427 of the Penal Code," he said in a statement today.

He added that four police reports were received yesterday, resulting in two investigation papers being opened over election offences.

"One investigation paper was opened under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief causing loss or damage to property.

"Another investigation paper was opened under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire causing loss or damage to property.

"Overall, from nomination day until yesterday, we received seven police reports and opened four investigation papers related to election offences," he said.

In a related development, Alzafny said police received 34 permit applications to hold political talks and campaign activities, all of which were approved after meeting the necessary conditions.

"All political programmes and activities held will be monitored by the police to ensure compliance with the law and to prevent any disruption to public order and security," he said. - NST
