PJ MP calls for flood warning systems in high-risk areas

PETALING JAYA: Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung is calling for the installation of flood warning systems along rivers and major drains, particularly near vulnerable commercial zones such as Jalan 223.

Speaking during a site visit to an inundated commercial warehouse on Monday (July 20) afternoon, Lee confirmed that a joint meeting between the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and affected local businesses would take place to tackle persistent drainage issues.

Representatives from the affected industrial site noted that the property had already been submerged twice this year—first in May and again during the July 18 storm.

Business owners urged local authorities to install early-warning mechanisms near key water channels to give traders adequate lead time to protect equipment and inventory.

Meanwhile, Damansara MP Gobind Singh Deo, in a press statement, underscored the severity of the recurring floods and landslides impacting his constituency, highlighting recent structural instabilities along the riverbank in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara.

Following a coordination meeting today with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), MBPJ, the Fire and Rescue Department, property developers, and technical agencies, Gobind instructed all parties to submit concrete proposals for both immediate relief and permanent mitigation.

"Immediate action and comprehensive long-term solutions must be implemented in tandem.

“The people of Damansara have the right to feel safe in their homes and communities. I will continue to monitor the situation closely and ensure that all relevant parties take the necessary action," said Gobind. - Star
