Penang health committee chairman Daniel Gooi says hygiene violations were uncovered during a routine inspection at the outlet.
State health committee chairman Daniel Gooi said the inspection was part of periodic enforcement efforts to ensure food premises in the state comply with food safety and cleanliness standards.
“This was not a special operation but routine enforcement carried out from time to time. Action will be taken against premises that fail to meet hygiene requirements,” he told a press conference at Komtar today.
The supermarket was issued a closure notice yesterday over cleanliness issues and will remain closed until Aug 2.
Gooi said the action was not meant to penalise operators but to protect public health and ensure businesses operate in a safe and hygienic environment.
“We have also seen several food poisoning cases this year and want to prevent similar incidents from recurring,” he said.
He said he would seek further details from the health department regarding the action taken against the supermarket.
Separately, Gooi said Covid-19; hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD); and dengue cases in Penang remained under control, with all three on a downward trend.
As of the 26th epidemiological week ending June 4, the number of Covid-19 cases dropped by 59.7% compared with the same period last year, while HFMD cases were down by 86.5%.
He said the number of dengue cases was also declining but did not disclose the figures.
However, he advised the public to remain vigilant, as the number of cases nationally was rising. - FMT
