Chief minister Hajiji Noor says the state will implement large-scale solar, hydropower, wind, biomass, and energy storage systems to ensure grid stability.

Chief minister Hajiji Noor said the state government is looking to gradually expand renewable energy capacity through large-scale solar, hydropower, wind, biomass, and energy storage systems to ensure grid stability, Borneo Post reported.
Hajiji said Sabah’s renewable energy capacity stood at about 307 megawatts (MW), or about 16% of its total generation mix.
He said the state is developing 450MW of large-scale solar projects, with 200MW expected to be completed by early 2027, and the remaining 250MW, now under tender, due in 2028.
“A 200MW or 400 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system project is also in the tender stage and is expected to be completed by 2028,” he told the state assembly today.
Hajiji also said a 100MW wind energy project is scheduled for completion by 2029.
Meanwhile, two major hydropower projects – the 187MW Upper Padas and 162MW Oriole Padas – are expected to be completed within four years.
“With these projects implemented in phases, Sabah’s renewable energy capacity is projected to reach about 1,200MW by 2030, or around 37% of the state’s generation mix,” he said.
He was responding to Arthur Joseph Kurup (BN-Sook), who asked about the Sabah government’s direction in increasing renewable energy capacity by 2030 and the strategic projects planned to achieve the target.
Launched in 2023, the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 aims to address the state’s immediate energy needs while laying the foundation for a sustainable energy industry over the long-term. - FMT
