Last week, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh asserted that the Malacca Constitution barred him from resigning as a state exco member because state governor Ali Rustam did not assent to it - a claim Malaysiakini debunked.
However, he changed his tune yesterday, saying he will resubmit his resignation if Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming does so.
“I accept the challenge from (former DAP leader Teng Chang Khim) for me to tender my resignation again.
“But on one condition, that you ask Nga to tender his resignation together with me. I am anak jantan (I’m a manly man),” he said at the Kapar Umno Youth annual meet yesterday.
Delegates at the meeting cheered and hollered as he issued the challenge.
‘Man up and step down’
He was responding to Teng, who last week asked him to man up and resign while disputing Akmal’s claim that he couldn’t proceed with resignation due to state law.
Contrary to Akmal’s claims, however, there are no provisions in the Malacca Constitution that allow the governor or anyone to bar an executive councillor from resigning.
Article 7(6) of the state constitution even explicitly states that executive councillors can resign at any time.
The challenge to Nga, meanwhile, stems from the DAP deputy chairperson saying he would resign as minister if BN wins big in the Johor state election and former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak is released from prison.
Critics have ignored the second trigger clause in Nga’s vow after BN won 48 out of 56 state seats in the Johor election.
PM challenged
Akmal further challenged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to sack all BN ministers and deputy ministers.
This is after Pakatan Harapan Youth urged BN office holders to quit over their pact with Perikatan Nasional in the Negeri Sembilan state election.
“I challenge the prime minister: if Umno ministers and deputies don’t resign, sack them,” Akmal said.
Anwar’s position on the matter yesterday was that any minister, deputy minister, or federal agency head campaigning in Negeri Sembilan should quit if they want to attack their colleagues in the federal coalition government. - Mkini
