PETALING JAYA: Malaysian shuttlers endured a disastrous day in the second round of the China Open, with only Pearly Tan-M Thinaah surviving.
The world No. 5 pair saved Malaysia’s blushes by defeating Ukraine’s world No. 29 pair Polina Buhrova-Yevheniia Kantemyr 21-19, 21-12 in a match lasting only 30 minutes at the Olympics Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou.
Pearly-Thinaah, who were semi-finalists at last year’s China Open, will play Japan’s top pair and world No 3 Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto in the last eight tomorrow.
Among those knocked out today were men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and men’ singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao. - FMT
