Nazri Kassim says the coalition is banking on the incumbent's track record and grassroots campaigning to fend off a challenge from former PH rep Rafie Abd Malek.
Nazri, who is also up against Bersatu’s Noor’Azah Harun, described the race against Rafie as healthy and normal political competition.
“Yes, we consider it a normal contest in politics. Of course, each side has its advantages and shortcomings,” he told FMT while campaigning in the constituency.
“This time, the contest seems to be person-to-person, voter-to-voter, house-to-house, surau-to-surau and mosque-to-mosque. That’s the campaign approach this time.”
Nazri said the response from voters over the first five days of campaigning had also given PH confidence in retaining the seat, citing what he described as positive feedback on incumbent Tengku Zamrah Tengku Sulaiman’s performance as assemblyman and state exco member.
“Our previous service had a good impact even though there are weaknesses that need improving,” he said.
Ampangan is one of Negeri Sembilan’s most marginal seats, having switched between BN-Umno and PH-PKR between 2008 and 2018. Tengku Zamrah retained it by just 329 votes in the 2023 state election.
Rafie won the seat on a PH ticket in 2018 but was dropped as the coalition’s candidate in 2023. He later joined PAS and is now contesting under the PN banner.
On his agenda if re-elected, Nazri said priority would go to basic infrastructure maintenance, given that Ampangan is a mature and developed area.
He cited roads, drains, rivers, garbage collection, landscaping and riverside recreational development as focus areas.
Nazri said flooding had also come up during the campaign, with voters calling for regular river maintenance to prevent recurring incidents. - FMT
