N SEMBILAN POLLS | Caretaker Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun said there is not enough time left for a debate with state Umno chairperson Jalaluddin Alias, as the election campaign is entering its final stretch.
He said any debate should have been held at the start of the campaign, not at the last minute.
According to Aminuddin, who is contesting in Linggi for Pakatan Harapan, candidates are now focused on reaching as many voters as possible in the remaining days of campaigning.
"I think time is quite tight. It should have been early on if he wanted to debate me, not at the end.
"Because we have given final strategies to the candidates who are preparing to face the election. We don't have much time; tomorrow is Friday, and the weekend is an important day off for us.
"We still need to be with our voters," he said in a press conference in Port Dickson today.
Negeri Sembilan voters will be casting their ballots for the state election on Aug 1.
Jalaluddin had earlier said he was willing to debate Aminuddin if invited, Sinar Harian reported.
However, the Umno leader said he had no intention of challenging anyone to a public debate.
No invite received
The BN candidate for the Pertang state seat said he had yet to receive any invitation and that it was not BN's practice to challenge political opponents to a debate.
"BN does not engage in challenging others to a public debate, or to be on a platform that we could say was the practice previously with several other parties.
"If there is one, I'm okay with it. If someone puts up an offer, I won't back down… I'll take it. On any issue," Jalaluddin added.
During the recent Johor election, Harapan’s Puteri Wangsa candidate Maszlee Malik had challenged Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi to a debate.
However, Onn rejected the challenge despite RTM offering to host a face-to-face debate.
The event eventually went ahead as a dialogue session featuring only Maszlee. - Mkini
