Abang Jo warns Sibu bridge project could be affected by Sarawak polls

Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg has warned that a proposed bridge in Sibu could be affected if there is a change of government after the next state polls.

Abang Johari said the RM400 million Sibu-West Bank bridge project, which will improve access between Sibu town and areas across the river, has already been designed, Dayak Daily reported.

“If the (current) government continues , the bridge will be built and it will take three years to complete. If the wrong choice is made (at the polls), then we can forget about it,” he was quoted as saying at a Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) convention in Sibu today.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman and PBB president added that voters in Sarawak’s central region have to decide whether they wanted more development projects for Sibu and its surrounding areas.

The next Sarawak state election is due by April 2027 at the latest, two months after the automatic dissolution of the state legislative assembly. However, there has been speculation that the state legislative assembly could be dissolved by the end of the year.

GPS currently holds a super majority with 79 seats in the 82-member state assembly, while DAP holds two and one is held by an independent assemblyman who backs the state government. - FMT
