Weightlifter Aniq secures first gold, with new Games records

National weightlifting ace Aniq Kasdan delivered Malaysia’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games by winning the men’s 60kg event and setting new Games records today.

Aniq secured the title with a total lift of 273kg, comprising 121kg in the snatch and 152kg in the clean and jerk, with both the clean and jerk and total lifts setting new records.

He finished ahead of Rishikanta Singh Chanambam of India who recorded 264kg, while Joshua Amunga Mboya of Kenya took bronze with 260kg.

The victory opened Malaysia’s gold-medal account in Glasgow and added to the bronze won earlier by para powerlifting ace Bonnie Bunyau Gustin.

Aniq was the defending Commonwealth Games champion, having won the men’s 55kg category in 2022 with a total lift of 249kg. He lifted 107kg in the snatch and 142kg in the clean and jerk, which was also a Games record. - FMT
