Shuhaily, who arrived at the ceremony on a high-powered BMW motorcycle, approached Ayob after the photo session before the two embraced in a prolonged hug.
He was seen whispering a few words to Ayob, drawing the attention of nearby officers and guests who witnessed the emotional exchange.
Earlier, Ayob was accorded full ceremonial honours during the beating retreat parade at Pulapol's parade ground, where he inspected the guard of honour before the Jalur Gemilang was raised as the Police Band performed Negaraku and Sang Saka Biru.
The ceremony also featured a march-past by the guard of honour, the parading out of the police colours, a special guest conducting session led by Ayob with the Police Band, the presentation of mementoes and the traditional Beating Retreat ceremony.
At the conclusion of the parade, Ayob and his wife, Puan Sri Zalena Mohd Ariffin, rode in a ceremonial vehicle to the Pulapol guardhouse, where he signed the visitors' book before making his final departure as a serving police officer.
Shuhaily later sought permission from Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail before joining the escort team accompanying Ayob's motorcade as the former deputy police chief left Pulapol for the last time in uniform.
Ayob officially retired today after nearly 35 years in the police force, ending a distinguished career marked by his fight against terrorism, organised crime and corruption, as well as his steadfast advocacy for integrity and professionalism within the service. - NST
