PETALING JAYA: Six men suspected of kidnapping a 44-year-old man for a RM7 million ransom earlier this month were brought to the magistrates' court here today.
The suspects were escorted from the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters under tight security by Criminal Investigation Department personnel dressed in tactical gear.
Family members looked on as the suspects were led into the court building.
The six men are expected to appear before Sessions Court judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said police had completed investigations into eight suspects linked to the July 17 kidnapping case.
He said the Attorney-General's Chambers on July 24 directed that six men be charged under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961.
The provision covers kidnapping for ransom and carries a jail term of between 30 and 40 years and whipping upon conviction.
He said the remaining two suspects, a man and a woman, were released and would serve as prosecution witnesses.
Meanwhile, the rescued victim was arrested under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 after investigators uncovered suspected links to a drug trafficking syndicate. - NST
