Pakatan Harapan communications director Fahmi Fadzil dismissed claims that state constituencies will be redrawn to reduce Malay and Muslim political influence if the coalition wins in the upcoming state election.
Fahmi called the allegation an unhealthy campaign tactic meant to frighten voters, and said the government would not support anything that weakens Malay or Muslim representation.
Astro Awani today reported PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan claiming that if Harapan wins again, it could use a future redelineation exercise to split large state constituencies.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan He claimed that if one large Harapan-held state constituency could be divided into three separate constituencies, this could give the coalition three seats, making it more difficult for other parties, especially Perikatan Nasional, PAS, and BN, to form the state government in the future.
Suhakam has called on the Pahang government to immediately protect the customary land rights of the Orang Asli community in Kampung Sungai Cot, Maran, amid its ongoing land dispute.
The human rights commission said while land administration falls under state authority, it must be exercised in accordance with the Federal Constitution, the rule of law, and Malaysia’s human rights obligations.
“Economic interests should never override the rights of Orang Asli and the protection of customary lands,” it said in a statement.
Suhakam urged the Pahang state government to meaningfully engage with the community, suspend activities that can permanently affect the disputed land, and strengthen mechanisms to recognise and protect Orang Asli customary lands. - Mkini
