KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning, with heavy rain and strong winds expected in seven states until midnight.

In a statement, MetMalaysia said the warning covers Gua Musang in Kelantan.

In Terengganu, the affected areas are Hulu Terengganu, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman.

In Pahang, the warning covers Rompin, Pekan, Kuantan, Jerantut and Lipis.

In Selangor, the affected areas are Kuala Selangor, Petaling and Klang.

The warning also covers Kota Tinggi, Johor Baru, Kulai and Pontian in Johor.

In Sarawak, the affected areas are Kanowit in Sibu; Julau and Pakan in Sarikei; Betong and Pusa in Betong; Sri Aman; Sebuyau, Gedong and Simunjan in Samarahan; Serian; Limbang; Marudi and Bario in Miri; and Song in Kapit.

In Sabah, the warning covers Sipitang, Tenom, Pensiangan, Sook, Keningau, Tambunan, Membakut and Beaufort in the Interior; the West Coast; and Tongod in Sandakan.

MetMalaysia issues a thunderstorm warning when there are signs of thunderstorms with rainfall exceeding 20mm an hour that is occurring or expected to occur for more than an hour.

Thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts valid for no more than six hours per issuance. - NST
