Ayer Hitam - DAP to bulldoze Amanah out?

A tug-of-war has emerged between Pakatan Harapan allies for Johor's Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat with DAP trying to muscle in although the Harapan leadership has said it will go to an Amanah candidate for the coming polls.
It was previously agreed during internal coalition talks that Amanah would contest the seat but under DAP's banner. However, this deal may now be unraveling.
DAP international secretary Teo Nie Ching and Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, both with political bases in Johor, confirmed that re-negotiations are taking place.
Teo said DAP is seeking Pakatan Harapan leadership approval to field its own candidate at Ayer Hitam.
“We are negotiating with Amanah. Yes, we are considering to contest there ourselves,” the Kulai MP told Malaysiakini.
However, Salahuddin (below) when contacted said the proposal was not finalised yet.
“We do not have any decision yet. You must wait for the official announcement by the top leadership.”
Asked whether Amanah had already provided its own candidate list to the leadership, Salahuddin replied in the negative.

He added although DAP may set up an election operations room in Ayer Hitam, this did not mean it would be fielding its own candidate.
“They will be opening an operations room. But they will do in some area they are not contesting,” said Salahuddin.
However, Malaysiakini learned that party veteran Lim Kit Siang is slated to open Johor DAP's election operation room in Ayer Hitam on Jan 28 at 5.30pm.
Yesterday, Chinese daily Sinchew reported that DAP was considering fielding heavyweights such as Kit Siang, Teo or Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong in Ayer Hitam against MCA deputy president and three-term Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, however, has said Kit Siang and Liew will not be placed in Ayer Hitam.
Regarding her possible candidacy, Teo (below) said the party would decide on the matter.
“It is too premature to comment. Let the party decide.”

In Harapan seat negotiations earlier this year, DAP surrendered the Alor Gajah and Tanjung Piai parliamentary seats to Bersatu and received Ayer Hitam - initially claimed by Amanah - as compensation.
With Amanah complaining they have been given too few parliamentary seats to contest in GE14, a proposed compromise was to place an Amanah candidate under DAP's logo.
Wee, meanwhile, said he was “honoured” that DAP had given up two parliamentary seats to do battle with him but questioned why it appeared reluctant to get into the ring on its own.
In the 2013 general election, Wee Ka Siong defeated PAS' Hu Pang Chow by a 7,310-vote majority. Hu has since joined Amanah. -Mkini
