IPOH: The Perak Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry has seized packets of prawn crackers bearing the halal logo without the approval of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).
Its enforcement chief officer Shamsul Nizam Khalil said a total of 1,600 empty packets and 396 packets containing the crackers worth a total of RM1,786 were seized from a factory in Lawan Kuda Baru in Gopeng on Thursday (Jan 4).
He said a statement from the 58-year-old owner of the premises had been recorded.
"The owner admitted that the business had been operating for two years and that the raw products were brought in from Indonesia.
"The company had never applied for halal certification for the prawn crackers," he told a press conference at his office here Friday.
