The facts speak for themselves. What Mahathir and Anwar thought back in the 1960s and 1970s has not changed. They still believe what they believed 50 years ago. So, what about what they thought about each other? Has Mahathir changed his mind about Anwar and vice versa? If you think they have then you are more stupid than you look. And so that you remember what they used to think about each other, and what they still think about each other, have a look at the video below.
THE CORRIDORS OF POWER
Raja Petra Kamarudin
The impression Pakatan Harapan is trying to give the public is that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim have buried the hatchet and have forgiven each other. Of course, they need to do that because if not then how can they convince the voters to vote for Pakatan Harapan if Mahathir and Anwar still hate each other and still wish to kill each other?
That is called political expediency. You do what you need to do and say what you need to say to give confidence to the voters so that they will vote for you. If the voters think Mahathir and Anwar are still trying to outfox or outwit each other then they will not vote for Pakatan Harapan.
Have Mahathir and Anwar really forgiven each other?
The argument that Mahathir and Anwar have changed and that they no longer think like how they used to and no longer carry the same old vices, doctrines, prejudices, hates, etc. is utter nonsense. If you believe that then you probably believe in Santa and the tooth fairy as well. When judging someone you need to look at the person’s long-term track record and history and not at just one point in time.
It is like taking your blood pressure reading. It is taken every 20 minutes over 24 hours and not just once when you visit the doctor. At that point of time when you visit the doctor the reading could be affected by many things but every 20 minutes over 24 hours and under different situations will reveal what the reading really is.
Take Mahathir’s views of the Chinese as one example. In 1969, he condemned the Chinese. He also condemned Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman for ‘giving in’ to the Chinese, and this is the reason for May 13, argued Mahathir. In the 1990s, Mahathir called the Chinese ‘Asian Jews without the hooked nose’. In 2013, Mahathir condemned Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak for ‘wasting time’ with the Chinese when the Chinese will still vote opposition whatever you do for them while it is the Malays who keep Umno in power and who Najib should look after.
Operasi Lalang was the result of Mahathir’s and Anwar’s attempt to kill Chinese schools
In his book ‘The Malay Dilemma’, Mahathir made it very clear what he thought of the Chinese. That was almost 50 years ago. Has Mahathir ever apologised for the book? Has he said he was wrong 50 years ago? Has he said he has changed his mind since then? Mahathir has said nothing. As far as he is concerned his views about the Chinese have never changed. And yet the Chinese say Mahathir has changed and now DAP should support him.
It is the same with Anwar. In 1978, he said Umno is the enemy of Islam because it opposes Hudud and the setting up of the Islamic State. In 1982, he told ABIM he was joining Umno so that he can change Umno from the inside and transform the party into a more Islamic party. If you want Islam to be implemented it cannot be done unless you have political power and since Umno is in power then you need to join Umno and take control of Umno to help Islam.
Many admit that Islam became more dominant when Mahathir was Prime Minister and Anwar was his running mate. Even Bahasa Malaysia became more dominant while Chinese education and Chinese schools were discriminated against during the Mahathir-Anwar era. When you talk about Islam, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese schools/education, all fingers point to Mahathir and Anwar. Have Mahathir and Anwar changed their views?
Many Malaysians are upset with the Sharia courts but seem to forget that this is Mahathir’s and Anwar’s doing
It was Mahathir who elevated the status of the Sharia courts, which has now created confusion as to the jurisdiction of the Sharia and common law courts. For example, if one spouse is Muslim and the other non-Muslim, which court has priority over the matter? No one knows and it is because of Mahathir. Even Anwar will not make any public statement regarding this.
Has Anwar changed his mind? Recently, when asked about Hudud, he said as a Muslim he cannot reject Hudud as that is God’s laws. That was his stand back in the 1970s and is still his stand today. But Malaysia cannot implement Hudud yet until Malaysians are educated about this matter and are ready to accept Hudud, said Anwar. And his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the PKR President, said the same thing during an Aljazeera interview.
And so that you remember what they used to think about each other, and what they still think about each other, have a look at this video below.
