KUALA LUMPUR – The Dewan Rakyat today featured a war of words between Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and the opposition who questioned how the Federal government’s debt stood at more than RM1 trillion.
Lim mostly remained calm even though he was provoked by opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who said that Lim had painted the picture as if the people are the ones who have to bear the country’s debt.
The situation in Dewan Rakyat became tense when Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) said answers given by Lim were information from Bank Negara which he already had knowledge of.
Lim then sarcastically asked Wee if he was aware that during Barisan Nasional’s (BN) administration, the government had paid RM7 billion on behalf of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
“Do you know that RM7 billion was paid by the previous government on behalf of 1MDB? Do you know about it or not?” he asked.
Wee, who took offence, merely said: “I only answer if it is true… you are being unfair… I will not know if it is not true.”
Lim then praised Zahid for admitting that he knew about the RM7 billion that the previous government had paid on behalf of 1MDB.
“If you cannot answer please sit down, be a gentleman… even Bagan Datuk, he knows,” Lim said.
The sitting erupted with laughter when Lim repeatedly said, “Do you know or not?”, each time Wee tried to stand up.
