KLANG – PKR de-facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, in his first campaign speech to help the PKR candidate in the Sungai Kandis by election, said there was nothing wrong with defending the royal institution.
He said he had no qualms about being called “pro-monarchy”.
“Some say I have become ‘pro-monarchy’ after meeting with the rulers and the Johor ruler especially.
“Our country recognises the monarchy. I have no problem defending them,” he said during a campaign speech in support of PKR candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni.
Anwar also touched on the importance of Bahasa Malaysia as the national language, saying it was fine to speak and master other languages as long as the Malay language remained the priority.
This is believed to be in response to recent protests over the government’s intention to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
Anwar said Pakatan Harapan (PH) would always stand firm on these issues and uphold the rights of the Malays and Islam.
Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, who is the Kota Raja MP, was present at the event. The Sungai Kandis seat is under the Kota Raja parliamentary constituency.
Zawawi will be up against BN’s Lokman Noor Adam and independent candidate, government pensioner K Murthy.
The by-election for the Sungai Kandis state seat this Saturday is the first by-election to be held after the GE14 following the death of incumbent assemblyman, Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, on July 2 due to cancer.
