PETALING JAYA: Seri Setia assemblyman and Selangor executive councillor Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin passed away at 6.28pm today, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil said.
Shaharuddin, 56, a PKR vice-president, is the chairman of the Selangor Islamic Affairs, Education and Human Capital Development Committee.
According to Shaharuddin’s senior secretary Zafrullah Aris, the former academic passed away at the Putrajaya Hospital.
His remains were brought back to his residence at Desa Pinggiran Putra, Kajang for funeral prayers.
He will be buried tomorrow morning at Tanah Perkuburan Kampung Limau Manis in Kajang.
Earlier this week, reports emerged claiming that Shaharuddin was terminally ill with colon cancer, sparking rumours that there would be another by-election in Selangor, the third for a state seat in under 100 days after the May 9 general election.
In the election, Shaharuddin won the Selangor seat with a 19,372-vote majority.
Former Sungai Kandis assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, also from PKR, succumbed to lymphoma on July 2, which paved the way for a by-election on Aug 4.
Following this, Balakong assemblyman Eddie Ng died in a road accident on July 20 and a by-election in the state constituency will be held on Sept 8.
