PETALING JAYA: Former Malaysia Airlines CEO and managing director Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman has rubbished comments by several PAS members that the uniforms of Malaysian flight attendants are too sexy.
“As an international airline, we have to compete with other airlines.
“Since cabin crew are in the front line of any airline service, heavy emphasis is placed on their dress code so that they look decent yet glamorous at the same time.
“I don’t think the dress code has broken the rules of any religion,” he told FMT.
His response comes after Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that airline companies were free to choose the uniform for their flight crew so long as it portrayed a good corporate image and was appropriate for carrying out emergency evacuations.
The National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) meanwhile said some MPs would rather argue about uniforms than talk about the safety and well-being of the workers.
“Don’t these MPs know that there are many important issues that need to be debated in Parliament other than the sexy uniform subject?” an official asked.
“These MPs should focus more on the welfare and safety of airline workers and how to improve the aviation industry as this subject has become a critical issue in the public domain.”
The official said there were many aspects of the aviation industry which needed “tremendous improvement”, as well as a need to revive some old policies in civil aviation departments.
“Malaysia Airlines has been mocked for its financial problems,” he added.
“Why can’t these MPs talk about the real stuff? Some of these MPs are also not doing enough research on airline industry issues.”
While the issue of flight attendants’ uniforms has cropped up many times over the years, airlines would have to spend a huge amount of money to make any alterations.
Flight attendant Sharon GK told FMT that many like her took pride in their uniform.
“Many flight attendants take pride in maintaining themselves just to look good. As for the uniform being sexy or not, that varies from one person to another.”
Former Malaysia Airlines flight attendant Effa Farizza Khamis meanwhile said there had been no complaints about the uniform during her three-year service in the airline industry.
“The uniforms I have worn have always been comfortable and appropriate during times of emergency.”
She added that other airlines belonging to Muslim-majority countries, like Qatar Airways, Emirates Airline and Etihad Airways, never had any issues with their flight attendants’ uniforms.
