Halimey to bring 'harapan' to petty traders

SERI SETIA POLLS | The son of a petty trader, Pakatan Harapan's Seri Setia candidate Halimey Abu Bakar is no stranger to the struggles faced by a segment of constituents in the Selangor state assembly seat.
Halimey, 48, revealed that not only did he grow up in Kampung Lindungan, one out of 24 polling districts under Seri Setia, his late father had also been appointed as the Petaling Jaya Petty Traders Association's first chairperson.
"My experiences growing up as the son of a petty trader who struggled with various hardships has opened my eyes to their ongoing struggles.
"When I see the poor conditions of their stalls, I am inspired to assist them," said Halimey on the fourth day of campaigning, at his daily press conference held at Harapan's main operations centre in SS5, Kampung Lindungan.
Prior to being nominated as Harapan's candidate, Halimey said he had worked to assist the traders in his capacity as a Petaling Jaya City Council councillor for 10 years from 2008.
"My priority as a councillor was to try and uplift the traders' standard of living.
"Among my efforts included building permanent kiosks and allowing them (the traders) more opportunities to conduct their businesses," said Halimey who was accompanied by former Kota Anggerik assemblyperson Yaakob Sapari.
If he defeats PAS' Dr Halimah Mohd Ali for the Seri Setia seat, Halimey said his plans would be to build more physical kiosks, as well as introduce petty traders to the use of technology through adopting an online business marketing module.
"I might not have the 'tangan emas’ (golden touch) to transform the petty traders into successful entrepreneurs in a short period of time, but I believe that with hard work and prayers, the dream will one day be realised.
"InsyaAllah their children will be the successors to their businesses," he said, adding that he also has plans to hold entrepreneurship courses for the younger generations.
After the press conference, Halimey proceeded to visit a cendol stall which had been moved to one of the new permanent covered stalls along PJS8.
Some 52,650 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in the Sept 8 by-election brought about by the passing of incumbent Shaharuddin Badaruddin on Aug 2.
Shaharuddin won the seat in the recent 14th general election with a majority of 19,372 votes defeating BN candidate Yusoff M Haniff; Mohd Ghazali Daud of PAS; and independent candidate S Vigneswaran. -Mkini
