SG KANDIS POLLS | PAS' open support for BN candidate in today's Sungai Kandis by-election has had no effect on Harapan, its candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said today.
Zawawi said in a democracy, everyone has the right to choose for themselves who they would like to support.
"In a democratic system, what is voiced by the party leaders are merely their personal opinions.
"PAS grassroots have the right to decide for themselves who they want as their state representative," he said to reporters after casting his vote at SK Jalan Kebun this morning.
He was commenting on the call by PAS leaders – such as PAS central committee member Khairuddin Aman Razali and information chief Nasrudin Hassan – who called for party members and supporters to vote for BN's Lokman Noor Adam so as to prevent Harapan from retaining its seat.
It was also reported that Kota Raja PAS chief Mohamed Diah Baharun had also urged the same, stating that failure to vote was akin to handing the vote to Harapan.
Up to 51,217 registered voters are set to cast their ballots today at 19 polling stations throughout the constituency. Polling will close at 5.30pm, and the result is expected to be announced by 10pm.
The Selangor state seat was previously held by PKR's Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, who died on July 2 due to lymphoma.
Shuhaimi won the Malay-majority seat by 12,480 votes in the May 9 general election. - Mkini
