The Finance Ministry tops the list of government bodies which must improve, according to Daim Zainuddin.

Daim, who heads the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) tasked with advising the government, said this was based on their findings over the past 100 days.

“Number one is the Ministry of Finance. It must bring in money, revenue for the country and make sure expenditure is not wasted.

“And there must be no corruption,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur this evening.

Lim Guan Eng is the current finance minister, and inherited the portfolio from former premier Najib Abdul Razak.

Daim, a former finance minister himself, was responding to Malaysiakini‘s question on what are the top three government agencies or sectors that the CEP found to be in need of improvement.

“And do not politicise the civil service,” he added, without elaborating.

CEP chief tells Malaysians to brace for tough calls

KUALA LUMPUR— The country must be ready for difficult decisions the government must make to undo decades of damage from Barisan Nasional rule, Tun Daim Zainuddin said today.

His caution followed the Council of Eminent Persons’ (CEP) announcement that it has completed its mandate and finalised a report containing recommendations for political, social and economic reforms.

“There are no quick-fixes to the problems that the council has identified and many challenges still lie ahead,” Daim, who heads the CEP, told a press conference that lasted close to an hour.

“The government and the rakyat must be ready to make and accept difficult decisions for the long-term benefit of the nation,” he added. MALAY MAIL
