No such thing as a sure win, come out to vote - DAP candidate

BALAKONG POLLS | DAP’s candidate for the Balakong by-election Wong Siew Ki has urged voters to not take the Sept 8 polls for granted.
Speaking at a morning market in Kampung Baru Batu 11 today, she asked the audience to demonstrate their support for the Pakatan Harapan government by voting for her.
“Many people tell me it doesn’t matter, and that I will definitely win. There is no such thing as a definite win!
“If everyone says it doesn’t matter and does not come out to vote, then we will be in trouble.
“I hope you will come out to vote this Sept 8. Your vote won’t just be a vote for me but a vote to show your support for Pakatan Harapan,” Wong said while standing on top of a pickup truck decorated with Harapan flags.
In the 14th general election, DAP’s Eddie Ng won the seat with an overwhelming 35,538 majority in a three-cornered fight with MCA and PAS. The by-election was triggered following Ng’s death in a car accident on Jul 20.
Wong is up against MCA’s Tan Chee Teong in the by-election.
Vote for Malaysia Baru
Stumping for Wong today was DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.
Asked by the press afterwards if he was concerned about a low voter turnout as seen during the recent Sungai Kandis by-election, Lim said he hoped voters would turn up and show their support for Harapan and “Malaysia Baru”.
“(The turnout) is something I am concerned about as more than 85 percent of voters voted in the 14th general election but this time, people may think we will win and not come out to vote.
“My message to voters is that this by-election is important for Balakong and Malaysia if we want to maintain the spirit of May 9 and build a Malaysia Baru(new Malaysia) for our future generations,” he said.
Lim also urged voters to vote out of gratitude to the late Ng.
“Every vote is a vote to show appreciation for Eddie Ng, who was a hardworking and responsible people’s representative,” he said.
The Sungai Kandis by-election earlier this month saw a mere 49.8 percent voter turnout, prompting Umno leaders to characterise it as a sign of protest against Harapan. - Mkini
