TO rack up a monthly maintenance bill of RM3 million for a yacht, the owner must be hosting lavish parties on board daily while keeping the vessel and its facilities running around the clock, says a luxury yacht specialist.
Mega Yacht Club of Vanuatu Ltd operation director Nicholas de Souza said such a sum was more than enough to keep on board a permanent highly-paid crew, including a senior ship captain, and service staff of 25 people.
“… but to spend RM3 million (monthly on yacht maintenance)… it has to be daily parties or a super grand party on a weekly basis,” he said.
De Souza said this in response to a report that it cost about RM3 million a month to maintain the infamous Equanimity, allegedly bought with money stolen from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
The 91.5-metre long vessel arrived at Port Klang yesterday, courtesy of Indonesian authorities which had seized the super yacht at the request of the US Department of Justice.
De Souza said the Equanimity was in the mega yacht class and no marina in Langkawi was equipped to receive a vessel of such size.
De Souza, who is familiar with mega yachts having worked with fleets of the vessel in several countries, said the RM3 million upkeep cost of the Equanimity was well above the cost of maintaining any luxury yacht that he knew.
“The reported figure would have kept the crew and guests in luxury (well beyond any stay) in a six-star hotel for a long time,” he said.
It cost about RM75,000 to maintain a luxury yacht in Langkawi, and the sum includes a minimal crew and berthing charges, he said.
“If it (the Equanimity) is (maintained) here, it (RM3 million a month) will be (enough to have) the crew staying at a high class hotel, keep watch on board at all times and to entertain guests almost on daily basis,” he said. –Bernama, August 8, 2018.
