Perak assembly installs own guards to thwart cops booting speaker again

The Perak state legislative assembly has replaced the police personnel with its own guards to avoid a repeat of the 2009 incident which saw the then speaker V Sivakumar forcibly ejected.
According to speaker Ngeh Koo Ham, the change is needed in order not to give the impression that the House is guarded and controlled by the police.
"We do not want to see a repeat of the incident when the police entered the assembly, took control of it and forcibly removed the speaker.
"It was a dark spot in the history of the Perak state legislative assembly and it should never have happened," he told a press conference today.
On May 7, 2009, Sivakumar (photo) was forcibly removed from the state assembly by plainclothes police officers after a long standoff following BN's move to appoint its own speaker.
This followed a coup staged by BN to form the state government in February that year.
The removal of Sivakumar marked the final blow to the shortlived Pakatan Rakyat Perak state government.
BN remained in power in Perak until May 9 this year, when Pakatan Harapan captured the state with 29 seats.
Former premier Najib Abdul Razak, who assumed office in April 2009, was credited with masterminding the takeover.
The coup was a result of three Pakatan Rakyat state assemblypersons declaring themselves as independents. - Mkini
