Remaking of political coalitions possible, says PAS veteran

PAS veteran Mustafa Ali said the breaking up and remaking of existing political coalitions in the country was a real possibility and this includes Pakatan Harapan.
However, the PAS advisory committee chairperson said what is certain was that his party cannot capture Putrajaya if it remains with its stance of going it alone.
"Harapan itself is not very stable, we can't expect what is going to happen in future.
"But what is certain, only a coalition can govern Malaysia, not a single party.
"Some parties may leave a coalition to join another coalition on the other side and certain parties on the other side may join another coalition on this side, that can happen," he told Malaysiakini in an interview.
Mustafa stressed that PAS' position of going it alone, like it did in the 14th general election, will not allow the party to capture federal power in a multi-racial and multi-party country.
"In this regard, I may hold a different view with other party leaders but past record has shown that no one party can win on its own.
"We may be able to win Kelantan and Terengganu on our own but not when it comes to Malaysia," he said.
Asked about PAS' friendly overtures with Umno in the concluded Sungai Kandis by-election and now in the Seri Setia by-election, Mustafa said for the moment, the cooperation was limited to the by-elections.
PAS had made way for Umno in the Aug 4 Sungai Kandis by-election and some PAS leaders also urged their members to vote Umno. However, Umno was unable to wrest the seat from Harapan.
Meanwhile, Umno made way for PAS in the Sept 8 Seri Setia by-election and had mobilised its members in support of PAS.
Mustafa said with the exception of new parties, PAS has had experience in cooperation with most major parties in the country's history.
As such, he said this would allow PAS to evaluate who would be the best partner for cooperation.
"PAS is based on Islam... If PAS' policies are not impacted, it will have no problems cooperating with any parties," he said. - Mkini
