The PAS president welcomes closer ties with its former rivals who are now in the opposition.

SHAH ALAM: PAS today said it would help campaign for the MCA candidate in the upcoming Balakong by-election to show opposition solidarity, adding that the Chinese party had never attacked PAS leaders the way DAP had done.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said there was a difference in the manner MCA and DAP opposed the Islamist party’s plan to introduce stricter shariah laws including hudud punishments.
“MCA too disagreed, but they only said they disagreed, and did not attack us the way DAP had done,” said Hadi.
The fallout between PAS and DAP over plans to introduce hudud in Kelantan caused the collapse of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, a loose pact formed between PAS, DAP and PKR in the aftermath of the 2008 polls.
PAS, which is currently the biggest opposition party after Umno, had openly sided with the Malay party during the recent Sungai Kandis by-election.
Hadi said he welcomed closer ties between PAS and Umno, and hoped both parties would show the same level of cooperation in the Seri Setia by-election, where Umno decided to stay out to allow a straight fight between PAS and Pakatan Harapan (PH).
In Seri Setia, PH’s Halimey Abu Bakar (PKR) will face off with PAS’ Dr Halimah Ali, while in Balakong, MCA’s Tan Chee Teong is standing against DAP’s Wong Siew Ki.
Voters in both constituencies will cast their ballots on Sept 8.
Hadi said Umno’s current image in the wake of highly publicised investigations into scandals linked to its leaders would not hinder cooperation with PAS.
He said he was confident that voters who supported PH would have a change of heart after seeing the the coalition’s “failures” within its 100 days in power.
“We saw this change in Sungai Kandis where there was low voter turnout, as well as an increase in votes for Umno and declining support for PH,” said Hadi -FMT
