Hadi campaigns for Mat Hasan, drubs 'Pak Pandir' government

RANTAU POLLS | PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang came to Rantau to campaign for Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan last night, describing him as a strong candidate who can take on the 'Pak Pandir' government currently in charge.
"When you debate in Parliament (they keep saying), 'ask the old government (BN)'.
"(Pakatan Harapan speaks) like Pak Pandir, 'it's not my child who died, it's someone else's child that died too'. This is a Pak Pandir philosophy," Hadi said at a ceramah in Taman Angsamas.
Pak Pandir is figured in classical Malay literature as a bumbling fool who always gets himself and his family into trouble.
PAS has a relatively small presence in Rantau. Data from the Rembau parliamentary election last year indicate that only 4.5 percent of Rantau voters cast their ballots for PAS, compared to BN (45.6 percent), and Harapan (48 percent).
While this may seem insignificant, if a large part of Rantau voters stick with how they voted at the parliamentary level last year, this PAS support could make a difference in a close fight.
More than 3,000 people attended last night's joint BN-PAS ceramah. The attendances at ceramah sessions held for this by-election have not been a reliable indicator of support as the numbers are often padded up by party members or supporters who are not from Rantau.
The Rantau by-election is a four-corned fight involving Mohamad, PKR's Dr S Streram and independent candidates R Malar and Mohd Nor Yasin.
The seat fell vacant after the Federal Court upheld a decision to void Mohamad's walkover win last year.
This stemmed from the returning officer's move to block Streram from filing his nomination papers in the 2018 general election.
